Day Trips

Oyster Cove Chalet is centrally located within easy access to the Huon Valley, Tahune Air Walk and Cockle Creek. This is the furthest point in Australia one can drive, but at this stage, the road is fairly rough and hire vehicles are not permitted on this section of the road below Ida Bay. Southern Tasmania's other premiere tourist attractions such as Port Arthur, Mt Field National Park and Lake Pedder, are just a day's touring from the complex.


"Derwent Valley"

The Derwent Valley and National Park are only a 1 hour drive from Hobart. National Park has spectacular walks, waterfalls and drives and among these are "Russell Falls", "Lady Barron Falls" and the "Tall Trees Walk".

The famous "Lake Pedder" and the "Gordon Dam" are another 1 hour 15 minutes up the road and the "Strathgordon Chalet" is open for meals and coffee.

"Hobart"

The capital city of Tasmania is Hobart. There are many things to do in this beautiful city on the Derwent River as Hobart has a rich maritime history and a visit to the Maritime Museum along with TMAG (or the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery) is a must. The Art gallery has a beautiful collection of Glovers paintings and of course an Antarctic display as Hobart is the gateway to Antarctica.

Other spots to see are of course is a visit to the Cascade Brewery, Mt Wellington, just 18 kilometers from the centre of town, the "Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens" with Pet's patch and the huge variety of cool climate plants, trees and shrubs.

"Port Arthur"

One of Tasmania's icon tourist destinations is "Port Arthur" A spectacular day excursion is a must as along with the "Port Arthur Historic site", many natural wonders can been seen along the highway.

The Tessellated Pavement, Tasman Blow Hole, Tasman Arch and the Devils Kitchen are must stop and see sights. Further on from Pt Arthur is Remarkable Cave, you must see this.

The convict trail is spectacular with great views of the Tasman Sea, soaring cliffs, sandy beaches and great spots to picnic along the way.

"Richmond Township"

15 Minutes from central Hobart is the Township of Richmond with it's famous bridge and the Coal River wineries. This is an impressive Georgian township with historical gems unmatched any where in Australia.

Richmond has many cafes, tea-rooms, an old fashioned lolly shop, and of course the old Georgian Building like the churches and shops

The townships Oatlands, Bothwell, Ross Campbell Town are all just of the Main Highway to Launceston. Its not impossible to slip over to Oatlands for a cuppa and then back over to Bothwell. The oldest golf course in Australia is at Bothwell and any keen golfer should take the opportunity to see it.
